The official soft opening for Astoria Coffee is this coming Monday, August 18th, but that’s not stopping them from thanking their myriad social media followers with a soft, soft opening today, and offering $1 off if you follow them online. Owners Dennis and Liz do a particularly lovely job with online engagement, so their soft opening is likely to be a big tent, busy, fun sort of welcoming party.
They have utterly transformed the former campaign headquarters of one of New York City’s more hilarious mayoral primary candidates, John Catsimatidis, into a stunning, modern, yet utterly welcoming space. Plenty of seating and free wifi ensure that this will be a new favorite place for locals to congregate.
On to the all-important beverages, I ordered a flat white, which was delicious, and their coffee menu is wonderfully succinct. Espresso and milk drinks are $4, brewed coffee is $2-$3, and the all important summer ice coffee is $3-$4.
As of Monday, they will be offering Affagatos with ice cream from Vendy Award nominated Ice & Vice. They will also be offering scoops and pints of Ice & Vice’s intriguing, lauded flavors. A few additional beverages are in the works, and I got a preview of a refreshing coffee-seltzer drink that I truly hope makes it to the menu! They are also offering a selection of pastries from Nolita’s popular Ceci Cela Bakery.
For now, Astoria Coffee’s hours will be 7am to 8pm daily. They are waiting for a license to serve beer and wine, and when that happens, which should be soon, the night hours will expand.
One final thing, if you’re not already following them on Twitter @AstoriaCoffeeNY, do so ASAP, and stop by tonight between 7pm and 10pm for a meet and greet and toast to their social media followers!
Welcome to the neighborhood, Astoria Coffee, we are so glad you’re here!
