If there is a better place in all of New York City to be reveling in World Cup 2014 madness than Astoria, I haven’t encountered it. Today that excitement will reach a fevered pitch as Greece takes on Costa Rica in knockout round action at 4pm, and I can’t think of a better day to stop by King Souvlaki of Astoria’s new, massive food truck for some great “Greek on the Street.”
The King Souvlaki of Astoria has been vending outstanding souvlaki to hungry Astorians at their location at the corner of 31st Street and 31st Avenue in Astoria since 1979. And up until a few weeks ago, their small, smoky cart was a fixture in the neighborhood. But times change, and the demand for street eats has never been greater in New York City, so brother Kostas and George recently unveiled a huge new mobile food truck from which to sell their tasty Greek fare.
I stopped by last week to try out the new truck, and was happy to find that my favorite souvlaki platter with their fresh homemade tzatziki and hand cut fries fried up in extra virgin olive oil – some of the best fries in Astoria by the way – was just as good as I remembered it from the small, smoky cart I loved.
Noticing the old, out of service cart sitting next to the brand new truck, I asked Kostas what he planned to do with it. He told me that it is just going to sit there for a while, he can’t part with it, it’s his baby. That old cart has earned a rest, now get out there to the new truck Astoria, and cheer on Greece today with some outstanding street eats.
