Eat this Now! Sandwich de Patacon at Arepas Grill in Astoria

Hardly a week goes by without my dropping by either Arepas Cafe on 36th Avenue, or their newer location, Arepas Grill on 21st Street and Broadway. Tonight I stopped in after a post work stroll up from Roosevelt Island and was excited to notice some new specials on the menu.

That's not bread, that's fried plantain. Get the Patacon at Arepas Grill.

Specifically the Shredded Chicken Sandwich de Patacon, a popular Venezuelan sandwich caught my eye.  This massive sandwich, which I’m tempted to call a Venezuelan Double Down, combines tender hunks of shredded chicken, lettuce, tomato, avocado (I held the avocado – yeah, I’m the only avocado-hater I know too) mayonnaise, ketchup, and soft, salty Guayanes cheese sandwiched between two plate sized flattened, fried green plantains.

This must-try sandwich is a delicious, massive and slightly messy (I only made it through about halfway without resorting to a knife and fork like a Patacon amateur). You can also opt to swap out the chicken for a shredded beef, pulled pork, shrimp or “mix” Patacon, and I have a feeling I’m going to work my way through all of them before this summer is through.

While the Patacon special is likely to become a menu staple, I recommend stopping in sooner than later to take in some World Cup games in Arepas Grill’s fun, festive atmosphere.  I’ll be there, and next time I’m gonna double down with that “mix” Patacon!
