The recommendation for my very favorite restaurant in Astoria came from someone whom I had never met. It was shortly after my girlfriend moved to Astoria (and a year before I was even living here) when one of her coworkers, a Queens native and longtime Astorian, told her about an inconspicuous little Greek restaurant at the corner of 23rd Avenue and 26th Street called Gregory’s 26 Corner Taverna.
I remember feeling grateful for being pointed toward an exceptional local eatery, and excited to learn a hidden secret about a neighborhood that I was well on my way to falling in love with. Those feelings are the origin of the Astoria Welcome Wagon.
It’s thrilling to walk the streets of a new neighborhood, happening upon new favorite places to eat. And it’s also helpful and fun to solicit suggestions from those who already know the neighborhood well. That’s where we come in: two Astoria food fanatics who love sharing our thoughts on great places to eat. Just send us an email answering a few quick questions and we’ll send you back suggestions for some of our favorite local fare!
In the next few months we’ll expand the Astoria Welcome Wagon to include additional contributors with suggestions for more great things to experience in Astoria, including where to hear live music, where to drink, and favorite ethnic and specialty markets. This way, neighborhood newcomers receive a roster of places that help immerse them in the food and culture of Astoria.
So if you’re an Astoria newcomer, or even if you’ve lived here for a while but haven’t ventured out to see what the neighborhood has to offer, let us know!
And welcome to Astoria – we promise you’re going to eat well here!
